| Antioxidant
Antioxidants are substances that are able to protect oxidation caused by pollution, smoking, ultraviolet sunlight, stress, excessive exercise, eating deep-fried fatty foods, medications and radiation. This is important because oxidation damages cells. Antioxidants help protect cells against this harmful effect. Antioxidants work together to bolster and strengthen the entire body system.
Five keys antioxidants are vitamins C and E, beta carotene, Co Q10, lipoic acid, glutathione, zinc and selenium. These are the network antioxidants. These network antioxidants greatly enhance the activity of each other in helping the body to maintain the right antioxidant balance that is to neutralize the free radicals.
Use of antioxidants has been intensively studied in particular for treatment of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. Antioxidants are used as ingredients in dietary supplements to maintain health and prevent diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, arthritis, macular degeneration and cataracts. Antioxidants enhance the antioxidant defense system, there by enhancing the immune system and slowing down the ageing process.
Antioxidant supplements promote health. Clinical trials did not detect that any excess of supplementation may be harmful. |
