Bound Feet Shoes
The origin of bound feet on women dates back to the 10th century in China stemming from the desire of dancers wanting to have feet the size of a lotus flower. The practice was quickly imitated by courtesans, joined by women of the richer class. To have feet bound then became a sign of social distinction. The feet of infant girls between the age of two and eight years were usually bound.
It was only able to explain that the main purpose of binding feet was to find ‘a husband’ and it was only their future then. To them small feet are still considered a criterion of beauty and has a fundamental erotic value to the men in those days.
This practice of feet binding in China was officially banned in 1911. This custom of feet binding that lasted thousands of years cannot be forgotten in less than a century. Those Chinese feet binding women were brought into Malaysia when the Chinese immigrated to Malaysia a few hundred years ago until the early 1900s. The Chinese foot binding women needed shoes and a trade of making shoes for them started in Malaysia. Foot binding did not become a custom in Malaysia but the trade of making the shoes continues as a craft in Malaysia, thus feet binding is not yet forgotten.
