Miniature 3-Tier Basket
Baba Nyonya are the descendants of the Chinese immigrants of late 15th to 16th century to Malaya (now is Malaysia). The Chinese then has assimilated part or full of the Malay custom mainly through marriage whereby the Chinese men taken the Malay women as wives or concubines.
3-Tier Basket is from the Chinese tradition which is used during the proposal of marriage whereby it is taken by the middle person of the suitor to the intended bride’s parent as a gift. The Baba Nyonya has taken on this Chinese tradition. In the 3-tier basket were put cakes, food and gifts to the bride’s parent as a proposal of marriage for their daughter. Nowadays, it is no longer widely used by the Baba Nyonya due to the western influence in Malaysia.
Miniature 3-Tier Basket is not easily found in Malaysia as it is a dying tradition in Malaysia. It is a hand woven rattan basket and beautifully lacquered with designs on it. You can see red and gold colour which to the Chinese signifies celebration and prosperity colour.
